Some decent Asian food in San Diego finally

Kok Lim, Singaporean who has been in San Diego for four years, doing his PhD in UCSD, took us to Tofu House in Convoy St for dinner. Convoy is like a mini-Chinatown for San Diego, which does not really have one.

The five of us were so happy to drive out here. The Asian food in downtown SD has been abysmal and this discovery was a welcome change.

You take the i-5 South, then into the i-52 East, and exit at Convoy, just 15 minutes drive from downtown. The place is like a Leng Kee or Jln Eunos, filled with many car dealerships. And lots of Asian food. The mall we went to was just after the Infiniti dealership.

This kind of place, tour bus don’t take you there one.

It was really cool to touch base with a fellow Singaporean, so many miles away from home. And he even drove out to meet us.

Kok Lim said, “Here, you have to drive everywhere. The public transport is not quite there, buses come like once an hour. To get here without driving, I would have had to take three buses and more than an hour. But driving only took me 15 minutes.”

When I first came here, I was not used to driving long distances,” Kok Lim continues, “but after a while, you don’t think twice about driving two, three hours to get to where you want to go.”

“Ya,” I said, “we Singaporeans drive a bit only say far.”

Gas (or petrol) here has seen a major surge in prices recently, just like us. It used to be around USD1.70 a gallon, Kok Lim told us, but now it is past USD3 a gallon, even touching USD4 a gallon at one point.

So I guess those who are driving those Hummers must be feeling the gas pinch now. But then if you can afford a Hummer, what’s gas, right?

You wait lah, USA. When a growing China starts to compete with you for natural resources like gas, you see whether your gas prices will be ONLY USD3 a gallon. Maybe it’s time to start riding the “IT’ bike, the one I saw on the hilarious South Park episode on TV tonight.
